  • As the Human Race evolves, our brains are shrinking

One anthropologist thinks that as human beings, because we specialize tasks, we rely more on each other and less on ourselves. From the hunter-gatherer groups to big cities. So we have to think less and less because our conveniences are automated. One swipe of the credit card. One button pressed and an elevator whisks us up into the clouds. A few coins into the washing machine and our clothes get cleaned. Microwaved food.

It makes me think...perhaps civilization is both good and bad for us. What a freakin dichotomy.

    Help, my brain is shrinking!
  • Proof that we suck

I understand the capitalistic system in which we live and for the most part I think it is a good one. But I have to scratch my head when I read something like this: Behemoth of the Seas

Any luxury that is imaginable, human beings strive for it.

I know that most cruise passengers are not repeat customers and I know that many of them are retired. What I don't get is that when we build bigger ships for luxury. Is leisure an end unto itself? It seems like it. Is it the fact that it makes economic sense for the proprietors of the business to accommodate as many people as possible?

It may make good business sense but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
  • I don't care if you think I'm all of the above

    I don't care if you think I'm:

    a) military-loving
    b) Obama-hating
    c) anti-Islamic
    d) all of the above
    e) none of the above.

I suppose some of you who think I'm either a,b,c, or d would say that MacArthur was anti-Japanese for successfully fighting Japan in World War 2. Or that America was anti-German for fighting the Nazis.

I'm anti-Muslims-who-kill-Americans. I'm anti-criminals-who-kill-soldiers. Hasan is a Muslim militant, there's really no other way to explain it. Even though Hasan swore an oath as a soldier he did not want to deploy to Afghanistan to fight other Muslims. He gave a lecture on it. I'm not skittish about labeling Hasan for what he is. I served with Marines who were Muslim and they were dutiful and easy to get along with. But Hasan is a terrorist who committed a terrorist act. Let's not be PC about it.

I don't love the military but I guess whoever said that I do probably hates them or can't stand what they do. I don't hate Obama but my detractors are probably Obama-worshiping yuppies. And even if I criticized Obama, do not think to win points by labeling me a hater. You "hated" Bush because you disagreed or demeaned every fucking thing he did. By the way, most of what Obama does as President Bush did also, but you thought the latter was the devil.
  • When a Christian fundie does something that the American media doesn't like, a liberal anchorman on CNN or MSNBC will have a minister on the air and demand that he denounce the actions.

But when Hasan, an American Muslim, killed 13 people in the name of Allah...silence.
  • What if Hasan was a Christian

What if Major Hasan was a Christian who contacted a right-wing Christian minister prior to murdering 13 fellow soldiers?

The media would say he was a crazed Christian fundamentalist who was out to kill soldiers for God.
  • What I like about old veterans

They're not politically correct like we are today. They don't mind calling their enemy, "Japs" or "Gooks."

Not that they have any deep malice towards anyone. They're old warrior gentlemen and they know who their enemy was. I think time removed any anger they might have held towards those they fought. They know they're going to die in a few years so I think they're trying to make the most of the years they have left. They know that nature and time is their enemy now.
  • Terrorism

Terrorists want us to change our behavior. Terrorism by definition is a violent act carried out by an extra-governmental organization and which purpose is to coerce political change. Major Hasan opposed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and did not want to be sent to fight other Muslims. As an Army psychiatrist, he would not have been directly involved in combat but would have been support personnel. Still, it must have rankled him to face the prospect of serving his country against fellow Muslims.

He's been a soldier since 1988. He's had time to adjust with the possibility that he might be deployed overseas. If we allow terrorists to change our behavior then they have won.

I think perceived slights against his Muslim faith may have worsened Major Hasan's distance from his society. I think he felt isolated already but the GWOT gave him an out...an excuse to hate fellow soldiers and to take out his anger and frustrations out on innocent people.
